Quartz
Otome mining district, Miyamoto, Yamanashi Prefecture, Honshu, Japan
51.0 x 48.0 x 14.0 mm
This excellent example of Japan-law twinned Quartz is from the Otome mining district which produced the specimens where this twinning was first described. This is a very transparent crystal measuring 51 x 48 x 14 mm, and has high glassy luster and well-developed striations. Only minor chipping. It is from the notable collections of Northland College (Ashland, Wisconsin), John Barlow and Gene la Berge. (Author: GneissWare)

Quartz
Otome mining district, Miyamoto, Yamanashi Prefecture, Honshu, Japan
80.0 x 62.0 x 27.0 mm
This very large Quartz is from the late 1800s to early 1900s, when the original Japanese Quartz specimens were produced, from which Japan law twinning was initially described. This is an old classic. It is damaged on both on the lower-left side, on and just past the prismatic associate crystal’s termination; and has a slight cleave on the back of the other termination (not seen from front). Still, this is a superbly aesthetic, dramatic piece from Japan with great provenance. Formerly in the Richard Hauck collection, the old Frederick Canfield label dates this to 1914, though it probably came to him in an older collection. Old Canfield labels are rare, as he bequeathed his entire mineral collection, plus a $50,000 endowment for its support and enlargement, to the Smithsonian Institution. Under conditions of the will, the Smithsonian may not disperse any of his specimens. (Author: GneissWare)
