OUTCROP AND BLACK BEACH SANDS
Just 50 metres from Spiaggia di Terranera, a prominent outcrop, captured in the top photograph, juts dramatically into the Tyrrhenian Sea. This geological sentinel is composed of Calamita Schists, ancient rocks forged from deep-sea sediments laid down over 300 million years ago. Their dark, layered structure is intricately crisscrossed by pale veins of leucogranite, creating a stunning natural tapestry.
As seen in the bottom photo, this mineral-rich geology is the source of the coastline’s famed feature: the iconic black sand. Glittering with Hematite and other Iron minerals, the beach is a direct legacy of the area’s mining past, poignantly marked by the colossal man-made block, a stark remnant of the former Capo Bianco mining site.
